Munetaka Murakami has always been a streaky hitter. There are months when it feels like he can hit a home run every night, and then there are stretches when his timing disappears and he doesn’t make much of an impact. That’s just part of the experience with Murakami. But when he’s locked in and seeing the ball well, there aren’t many hitters in baseball who are more dangerous. One mistake over the plate can completely change a game, and right now, he looks like he’s getting hot at the perfect time.
That’s exactly what happened after Miguel Vargas led off the fourth inning with a single. Murakami stepped to the plate and crushed a two-run homer to give the White Sox a 2–0 lead. It was a huge swing, not only because it put Chicago in front, but because it immediately forced Cleveland to play from behind. This is the kind of moment the White Sox wanted when they brought Murakami to Chicago. He’s supposed to be the hitter who can take over a game with one swing, and he did it on the playoff stage. Honestly, the entire White Sox season has been unbelievable. Almost nobody expected them to be here before the year started, but they’ve continued to prove people wrong. If Murakami stays hot, this surprising run could become even more interesting.
