Seiya Suzuki’s baseball career has been quite impressive. He
was born on August 18, 1994, in Arakawa, Tokyo, Japan, and before he ever
became a Chicago Cub, he had already built a strong reputation in Japan. He
played for the Hiroshima Toyo Carp in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball
league, where he became one of the best hitters in the league. He was not just
someone who had one good season either. Suzuki made multiple All-Star teams, won
Best Nine Awards, earned Gold Glove Awards, and won batting titles. From 2016
to 2021, he showed that he could hit for both average and power, which is one
of the harder things to do in baseball. This shows how consistent he was before
even making the jump to Major League Baseball.
In 2022, Suzuki signed with the Chicago Cubs, and that was a
big step in his career because moving from Japanese baseball to Major League
Baseball is not always easy. For one thing, the pitching is different, the
schedule is longer, and the expectations are high when a team signs a player
who was already successful overseas. Even with that pressure, Suzuki started
his MLB career strong. He was named National League Rookie of the Month in
April 2022 and reached base in his first 12 major league games. That does not
mean the transition was simple, but it does show that he had the talent and
approach to compete at the MLB level right away.
Another important part of Suzuki’s career is what he has done
for Japan internationally. He helped Team Japan win the gold medal at the Tokyo
Olympics, which is a major accomplishment because baseball is extremely
important in Japan. He also played in other international tournaments,
including the Premier12, where he was named MVP in 2019. This shows that Suzuki
has been able to perform in big situations, not just during regular league
games. Whether he was playing for the Carp, the Cubs, or his country, he has
shown that he can handle important moments.
What makes Seiya Suzuki stand out to me is not just the
awards or the numbers, but the way his career has progressed. He started as a
young player in Japan, became a star there, and then challenged himself by
coming to the United States to play against some of the best players in the
world. There is still pressure that comes with proving yourself in MLB,
especially after having so much success before arriving, but Suzuki has shown
that he belongs. His story shows how hard it is to adjust to a new league and
still make an impact. That is why I think Seiya Suzuki is more than just a talented
baseball player. He is someone who took a risk, trusted his ability, and continued
to prove himself at a high level. And recently, he became the fourth Japanese born player to reach over 100 homers in an MLB career.
