Sung-Mun Song is the former teammate of Hye-Seong Kim, the Dodger's utility man who came to the MLB in 2025. Hye-Seong experienced some success, but he struggled with MLB fastballs, leading to an increase in strikeouts; however, he eventually made adjustments. But, since he wasn't utilized in the lineup as much as he should have, he dwindled down to a limited role, used only in some situations.
Song's career path had been different. While Lee Jung Hoo, Hye-Seong Kim, and Ha-Seong Kim enjoyed successful careers in the KBO for many years, Song initially struggled to find success in the beginning of his career. In fact, he was not that excellent. He didn't have a full season until 2022, when he was 25-26.
Here are his numbers:
2022: .247 BA, .302 OBP, .371 SLG, and .673 OPS
2023: .263 BA, .325 OBP, .358 SLG, and .683 OPS
2024: .340 BA, .409 OBP, .518 SLG, and .927 OPS
2025: .315 BA, .387 OBP, .530 SLG, and a .917 OPS
As you can see, he's been improving every year for the last 4 years. Even if he doesn't hit .340 or .315 at the MLB level, his constant improvements are reasons to take him seriously as an MLB prospect.
The only downside to him is that he is several years older than Lee Jung Hoo, Hye-Seong Kim, and Ha-Seong Kim when they came over to the MLB level. While the following players had seen their share of success, none of them could be considered dominant. They are outstanding defensive specialists, but none of them are home run kings or batting champions. Lee Jung Hoo finished the 2025 season with a .266 BA, 8 homers, 55 RBIs, and 149 hits. These are above the numbers that any MLB player would love to have. However, to make a significant impact in MLB, players must achieve superstar-level numbers.
Consider the performance of players like Shohei Ohtani and Aaron Judge, as well as the prime statistics of Bryce Harper and Mike Trout, alongside Cal Raleigh's achievements. They are superstars for those reasons.
Sung-Mun Song is a risk for any team that signs him because he's older than the ideal prospect for moving to the MLB. He's 29 years old, but he could be what a team needs in order to win a few more dozen games.
