Corbin Carroll's historic season makes Diamondbacks season a disappointment

Corbin Carroll in 2022

Corbin Carroll’s season has been quite memorable. He became the first player in MLB history to hit 4 multi-homer games and 4 multi-triple games in a single season; however, his team is not in the playoff picture, sitting at 11-12 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers, the NL West leaders. There might be a glimmer of hope, but it’s very unlikely to happen. For one thing, making the playoffs depends solely on the San Diego Padres’ performance. They would have to collapse to not be able to make the playoffs. Only in that scenario could they potentially make the playoffs. With fewer than 30 games remaining in the regular season, it is very unlikely that they will make the postseason. They would have to complete a winning streak, along with the Padres going on a losing streak. If there were more games left in the season, it may be easier to catch up.

The Diamondbacks were 39-41 in the first 80 games of the season, but they seemed at that point to have a legitimate chance to possibly make a push for the postseason, since at that time the Padres had a 44-36 record, five games ahead of them. This shows how hard it is to catch up when the team you are playing catch-up with is also winning and not losing when you are winning for any significant amount of time.

Corbin Carroll has made history, but it would have been better if that historic accomplishment had culminated in a playoff run. There’s still a statistical chance the Diamondbacks could make the playoffs, but statistically, the chances of that happening are very slim, seeing as Corbin’s team is about 10 games behind the Padres.

The Dodgers are comfortably in the lead against the Diamondbacks, as Shohei Ohtani is poised for another MVP season. Once again, they are one of the heavy favorites to win it all. If they win the World Series again, it wouldn’t be a surprise, but if they don’t win, it would be nothing more than a disappointment.
