Shohei Ohtani To 50-50

Shohei waiting his turn

No one has ever seen the likes of Shohei Ohtani. There is just no comparison. He is just simply one of a kind. He can pitch. He can hit. He runs well. And he can even play in the outfield. He did so in Japan for a couple of years.

On August 23rd, as if it was a script for the conclusion of a movie where the hero hits a grand slam to solidify MVP status, Shohei hit a grand slam to win the game. With 2 outs, in the bottom of the 9th, the first pitch he sees, he drives the ball out of the field to become the 6th member of the 40-40 club in his 122nd game of the year, the fastest pace to have ever been done. He is doing this while recovering from Tommy John surgery. With this, he is also on pace to become the first DH to win the Most Valuable Player Award.

There was a scary moment in the August 25th game when Shohei got hit on the wrist with a ball. He grimaced, apparently in pain. Later, an MRI revealed negative results, which means he will not miss playing time. It would have been a tremendous blow if he was injured because of the historical significance of a possible 50-50 season.

Bryan Woo

Much of the attention has been directed at Shohei Ohtani, but what Bryan Woo is doing is also impressive. In his last 5 appearances, Woo is 1-1 with 27 strikeouts, sporting an ERA of 1.45.

What's not to love about Woo? He gives it his all every time he is on the mound. If he pitches like that in the playoffs, the Mariners will be a pest to any team they face; however, that also assumes they make the playoffs. At this stage of the season, there is still a possibility that they may not even make the playoffs. They are 5 games back of the last wild-card spot. With 30 games left this off-season, the likelihood of them making the playoffs will be slim. 5 games back is huge because they need help from a couple of teams to move up in the standings as they are pressured to win. They need to get on a winning streak, and, at this rate, it does not appear to be a possibility. It does not mean it is not possible. It just means they need to pile up some wins in a hurry.

Steven Kwan

Steven Kwan was on pace to hit .400 earlier in the season. He has cooled down since then, batting .302 this year. He has an average of .128 in his last 10 games, with a home run, 2 RBIs, and 4 runs scored. It has been a tough stretch for the young man. He will get out of the slump, of course, but as to when that is, that remains the question. Let's just hope that he gets hot in the playoffs. His team, the Cleveland Guardians is still 1st in the AL Central. There is no desperation to gather wins in a hurry, but they must not lack urgency.
