The White Sox Should Trade Tommy Pham

The White Sox should trade Tommy Pham

The Chicago White Sox is one of the worst teams in MLB, and in terms of rebuilding, they must make some moves, a big move. Trading Pham to get prospects should be ideal for the team. The season is over. They were bad three years ago. They were bad two years ago. They were bad last year. And they are bad now. That is three consecutive years of bad baseball. Things need to change and getting viable prospects is the way to move forward from this terrible trend.

Tommy Pham is a journeyman who can still provide the spark for a contending team and could help ease some of the pressure. Spending some time in the minors this season, he has been a great asset to the White Sox since returning to the majors, slashing an average of .260+. When he joined the White Sox, they were already one of the worst teams in the league with a 3-22 start, the worst in franchise history. It was so bad that only ten days before April 26th, on April 16th, Tommy had just signed a minor league deal with the White Sox.

Just the year prior, Pham, a player with Vietnamese ancestry, had helped the Arizona Diamondbacks make a World Series appearance, averaging .256, hitting 16 home runs, and sporting 68 RBIs between his time with the New York Mets and Arizona Diamondbacks. In the 2023 postseason, he averaged .279 and hit 3 homers with 4 RBIs. This, to me, is proof that a journeyman can indeed help a contending team make it to the next level. He is a sturdy veteran who can perform at the highest level if allowed to shine.

Pham has played for multiple teams throughout his career. He has played for the St. Louis Cardinals, Tampa Bay Rays, San Diego Padres, Cincinnati Reds, Boston Red Sox, New York Mets, Arizona Diamondbacks, and finally the White Sox. In his eleven years in the big leagues, he has played for 8 teams. He never found a team he could play for for a long period.

2017 was his best year in his playing career when he batted .306/.411/.520, sporting 23 homers. He stole 25 bases, hit 22 doubles, and recorded 73 RBIs. With this kind of performance, one would assume he would get an extension with the Cardinals, but he had a somewhat average year in 2018, quite a contrast to his 2017 MVP-worthy performance. This shows just how cruel the world of professional sports can be. People easily forget your past performances. It is a world focused on present performance rather than the latter.

The 36-year-old outfielder has been completely ignored, something that may have been because of his age. He is getting older, but he may not be done as a valuable member of any team. He still has baserunning and outfielder skills adequate to make huge contributions. For a team making a push for the World Series, Pham is a great player to have on your team.
