Tommy Edman, Lars Nootbaar, Tommy Pham, and Steven Kwan
The St. Louis Cardinals are playing their best baseball of the year; however, most of it is without their two Asian stars, Lars Nootbar and Tommy Edman. Tommy has been out for over 80 games. Because the two stars have been injured, it has forced other players to step in. And, they have answered the call, as the Cardinals are now 4 games over .500 and are in position to make a playoff spot.
Tommy Edman has been out since wrist surgery last season and has not seen Major League action since October. A week ago, while just a few weeks away from returning to action to start a rehab game, he sprained his ankle. 2023 and 2024 have been cruel for Edman. If indeed he does return to the lineup this year, it would be unrealistic to expect to see him in top form immediately. It would just be too difficult to come back right away without being rusty for a week or two.
With the Cardinals playing so well, there is no need to rush the two stars into returning. The team should be grateful that an opportunity like this has been given. As much as I want Edman to return to action, I would rather have him return when he is 100% ready. Meanwhile, he is enjoying some of his free time with his baby.
Lars Nootbaar could return to the lineup as early as this Friday against the Nationals. It will be great to see him back again. More likely than not, Friday is his slated return date.
Despite Steven Kwan being held hitless, the Guardians won 7-6 against Tommy Pham's Chicago White Sox, who also did not record a hit in 1 official at-bat.
Shohei Ohtani for MVP
Last night, Shohei Ohtani hit his 27th homerun, furthering his claim for MVP. If he continues at this kind of level of play, it would be impossible for him not to become the first designated hitter to win the award. It has just been difficult for previously designated hitters to accomplish such a feat simply because they do not normally play on the field for defensive purposes. It would be very difficult for voters to say no to Ohtani because he is doing twice the production of a great DH. Way to go, Shohei!
He is so fun to watch.
