Arjun Nimmala Is A Special Talent

Arjun Nimmala, the top pick of the Toronto Blue Jays in 2023 is not starting his career dominating. He is struggling. That is expected. He's a kid at 18 years old. Considered to be one of the most promising shortstops in the world, he has all the natural talent to someday succeed in the major leagues. He just needs to hone them.

He was born in Tampa Bay, Florida, U.S.A. to Indian—born parents who immigrated to the U.S. in 2002. His father, Balu, was a cricket player from India. He wanted to find a sport similar to cricket, so he signed his son up to a baseball league.

“And that's kind of how I got started,” Arjun said in an interview.

Arjun is the prototypical baseball player. He possesses speed, power, and intelligence. He is a superb infielder and can hit the ball anywhere. Although he has all these things, he is about 4-5 years away from the major leagues.

In the minor leagues so far, he has had 144 at-bats, averaging .174, with 3 home runs, 5 stolen bases, and .656 OPS as of the writing of this entry. We have to take into consideration that he got drafted straight out of high school. At 6 feet 1 inches and weighing 170 pounds, he is a lanky shortstop with athleticism that catches the eyes of scouts. He needs to, however, add weight, roughly about 20 pounds. He should not add more than that because too much added weight would sacrifice his speed. That is definitely not what you want to exchange. Around 190-200 pounds should be his goal.

Nimmala garnered loads of attention after winning Florida Gatorade Player of the Year and was given the Wade Boggs Athletic Award, an award handed out to the best player in Hillsborough County, Florida. Rightfully so, when you are totally dominating the competition after batting an impressive .479 with 29 runs batted in and 6 home runs. He uses his hips to add some pop to his swing. He somehow does it rather quickly. With a great batting coach, he can improve his swing by learning how to recognize faster pitches. He is in the adjustment period of his career, having come from the High School ranks all the way to being drafted 20th overall in the MLB draft. This shows that he is developing faster than the average player his age.

It is not difficult to see that there is extra pressure on him to perform well. He even said it himself when he said, “Hopefully one day I can inspire young Indian Americans.” Arjun Nimmala is proud of his Indian heritage. He still has strong connections to his family in India and even finds the time to play Cricket, the sport his father played when he visits there.

Arjun Nimmala is under pressure, but his natural athletic talents will catapult him to a worldwide superstar. I am looking forward to see this young man shine on the biggest stage of all professional baseball, the Major Leagues.
